Psalms, Hymns and Spiritual Songs, Oh My!
Just thinking out loud on this one ~ in Ephesians 5, the Apostle Paul commands us to be “filled with the Holy Spirit” and then immediately follows this with a command to speak to one another in Psalms, Hymns, and Spiritual Songs, singing and making melody in our hearts before God.
And I cannot help but wonder if the fact that MOST of our churches split these three things up (Psalms to the Reformed, Hymns to the Baptist, Spiritual Songs to the Charismatic, as if this was merely a matter of “style preference”) is perhaps ONE of the reasons we don’t experience the FILLING of the Holy Spirit in most of our churches? ….
If we were to have a God-glorifying, Body-edifying blend of all THREE, as Paul commands, here, I just wonder what kind of TRANSFORMATION we might see? After all, God’s Word says he inhabits the praises of his people, yes?
How different would we be, how much more of His presence would we be able to “sense” if we were to praise him as HE has set forth, rather than as our traditions have (or our aversion to tradition has) set forth? …. Hm.
