“Look Full In His Wonderful Face”
A recent Devotional Post at WONDERSWORD:
“…What we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ. These things we write, so that our joy may be made complete.
This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all….” (1 John 1:3-5, NASB)
The winter blues seem to get much blues-ier when you have an office job; particularly if your office happens to be in a corner of the building with literally no windows. You come to work when it’s dark, you live for a few hours under a wee bit of artificial light, and then you leave work at the end of the day only to find it’s once again…DARK.
Then there is the odd moment when you have a chance to meet in the front conference room with a client for an hour or so, and the warm sunlight is streaming in to your little fish-bowl, and the room – certainly in comparison to your dungeon office – practically sparkles! Perhaps the meeting doesn’t even go particularly well, but you nevertheless return to your office with your mood noticeably lifted, all because you encountered a wee bit of the REAL THING….the SUN.
Too many of us live our day to day spiritual lives on so much artificial light. We muster up positive thoughts, try to generate Scriptural phrases of encouragement for ourselves or others, and we may even spend time in the Bible only to walk away feeling like we just didn’t quite connect. We may not even realize that our spirits are shriveling up inside us, until that momentary chance encounter with a fit Scripture aptly applied by the Spirit of God to our hearts, or the unmistakable, if brief, presence of God in a heart-to-heart conversation with a brother or sister in Christ.
Beloved, we were not made for the winter blues! We were not made for shriveling up or shrinking back! And we certainly were not made for artificial light in boxed-in offices in the dungeon corners of our walk with God. God’s word promises the children of God they will receive wave upon wave of Grace (John 1:16), like the tide rushing in with the very FULLNESS of Christ. God’s word reveals that we are made to be increasing from one form of glory to another (2 Cor. 3:17-18) even as we are fixing our gaze on Christ (Hebrews 12:1-2). And this is not just a someday promise of spring, as if this life may be dark, but oh won’t heaven be glorious! Why is heaven glorious? Because HE is there, the lover of our souls! And yet we have, in truth, our inheritance even now, for Jesus has promised he is present with us HERE, even unto the end of the age (Matt. 28:20)!
The word of God – both the written word and the PERSON of Jesus who is the very word of God! (John 1:14) – is our LIGHT! When the rays of God’s self-revelation and presence fall fresh on us, our hearts are warmed and we, like sunflowers, cannot help but turn our faces toward him to receive however much more he delights to pour out on us.
This word isn’t merely for the increasing our learning, so we might know more ABOUT our God and Savior. This word is for the transformation of our hearts and minds so that we might know and receive more of HIM, and delight in his presence, trusting HIM to make us fit for his glory by the work of his Spirit.
So are you feeling lackluster, a wee bit like your walk with God is illuminated only with flickering fluorescent bulbs? Today, this week, don’t just sit at the window to soak in a ray or two of the grace of God – swing wide the doors and run into his presence, just as you are!
“Taste and see that the LORD is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” (Psalm 34:8)
“O soul, are you weary and troubled? No light in the darkness you see? There’s light for a look at the Savior, And life more abundant and free! Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Look full in His wonderful face, And the things of earth will grow strangely dim, In the light of His glory and grace.”
